Clinical Summaries
redesign
redesign
The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery (JBJS) publishes Clinical Summaries, synopses of the current “State of the Science” for common orthopaedic conditions. The board of directors felt that these Summaries were very plain-looking and not user-friendly.
I served as the UX designer and product manager. I redesigned the product, conducted reviews with stakeholders and management, and directed development with our tech team.
April – December 2024
Text heavy
Very plain
It's not clear to users what the "blue dots" are
"Right rail" layout is not visually pleasing
"Clinical Summaries" does not clearly describe what product offers
In order to solve these problems, the redesigned Clinical Summary should have:
Superscript reference numbers rather than blue dots, which would pop open a reference on mouse hover
Hero images, and images throughout
New layout with tabs rather than a rail
New name for the product, to be determined by the Marketing team.
I sketched out a couple concepts. Here is the one that stakeholders liked the best.
I made interactive high-fidelity mockups in Figma. See here.
There were various small tweaks, but here is the finished product. The name eventually chosen for the product, to launch alongside the redesign, was "JBJS Summaries."
The stakeholders were very pleased with the new design. The Marketing team especially thought it would make great promotional screenshots. Time and analytics data will tell if usage will increase.
This project was lengthy and time-consuming, but it was a pleasure to work on, and I feel an incredible sense of accomplishment now that it is finished. I hope to apply the JBJS Summaries design to JBJS's article eReader, which is also currently extremely plain, in a future project.
